fevnut's quiz questions #9: The Answers

Image
Last week we posed 3 multiple choice questions and one further question. Here are the answers. Question 4: Several clubs have played in Super League under two different names (e.g. Wigan [1996] and Wigan Warriors [1997-2024]. But which two clubs have used three different names while playing in Super League? We owe you all an apology over this one! We thought that the answers should be: Salford - Salford Reds, Salford City Reds and Salford Red Devils and  Hull - Hull, Hull Sharks and Hull FC but then we realised, too late, that Hull had been just plain 'Hull' in 1996 but they were in the First Division and not Super League that year!!

Head Coach: Mark Moxon   Following Craig Lingard’s move to Castleford Tigers for the 2024 season, Mark Moxon has moved up from assistant coach to head coach for the Bulldogs. He had been assistant coach at Batley for the last 12 seasons. His playing career was as a halfback or hooker and he made his first grade début with Huddersfield Giants in 1998. He signed for Doncaster in 2003 and Halifax in 2004 and finished his playing career at Hunslet from 2005-2009.   Captain: James Brown   James Brown took over the captaincy from Shaun Lunt at the start of the 2021 season. He made his début with Swinton in 2013 and then joined Batley in 2015 where he has remained ever since although he did play one game for Keighley on dual reg in 2017. He usually plays at prop or loose forward.     Loan players and Dual Registration   Batley have a dual registration agreement with Castleford Tigers which is hardly surprising as Craig Lingard is the Castleford coach. This week's referee: Fev v Batley (Championship Round 18)

Do the RFL send us this referee when they want to save on travel expenses? The chances are that we will get a rather stop start game as he is well above average for penalties and yellow cards and a bit above the average for red cards too.

Wakefield Trinity v Fev (Championship Round 17): 21 Man Squads

Image
Fev and Wakefield have both published their squads for Sunday although Fev have only named 18 players and that includes 2 on dual reg, Samy Kibula (prop/loose forward - loan signing from Castleford) and Maddox Jeffrey (winger who we have signed from Wigan but started out at Featherstone Lions). We find it quite difficult to see the potential shape of the teams in the form in which the clubs publish the squads so we just have to use guesswork, whilst taking into consideration the line-ups in each club's last match, to set them out in the traditional manner running from fullback to loose forward and then subs. Players in pink are on dual reg, players in green on loan.

fevnut's musings 2024/#26: Doncaster, Great Performances and International Rugby League

Image
Doncaster We spent quite a lot of time thinking about how we could express what we felt about last Sunday’s game against Doncaster. Then into our brain crept the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” and we immediately realised what picture would brilliantly sum it up. It is, of course, Edvard Munch’s famous 189 3 painting 'The Scream'. So, what made us feel like that. To lose at home to Doncaster, who we beat 46-4 three months ago at their place, wasn’t, in itself, enough to make us feel the way we did. There have been many occasions when we have been saddened by watching Fev lose and there have also been a few occasions when we have lost and we nevertheless felt quite proud of our performance. But both sad and proud were totally inapplicable this time. This time, we’re sorry to say, it was anger and despondency. Enough to make us want to scream! We hardly ever set up any passing movements and when we did it was laboriously slow with inaccurate passes. I
