Hunslet v Fev (1895 Cup Group Match 1): 21 Man Squads

Image
Fev and Hunslet have now both published the 21 Man Squad for Sunday.  We find it quite difficult to see the potential shape of the teams in the form in which the clubs publish the squads so we just have to use guesswork  to set them out in the traditional manner running from fullback to loose forward and then subs. Any loan players are shown in green, dual reg players in pink.

This Week's referee: Hunslet v Fev (1895 Group Stage Match 1)

A referee who never officiated in a Fev match previously. For now we will be showing Ref stats for 2023. In due course we will add 2024 matches to the list of the referee's games and later in the season we will switch to data based on 2024 performances.

fevnut's musings 2024/#01: New season, rule changes and new signings

A new season begins As far as we are concerned New Year’s Day is a bit like Easter Sunday because it moves dates from year to year. That’s because, since the change to ‘Summer’ rugby we think of the first competitive match as being our New Year’s Day. Whoever coined the term ‘Summer’ rugby is a bit calendar challenged when it starts in January and there was even a time (2000-2002) when it started in December!   2024 So, after the heart-breaking end to last season, like many Fev fans, we really don’t know what to expect this coming year. After a year, in which we were all expecting to win promotion, we go into 2024 with a drastically reduced playing budget and a much smaller squad. But maybe, we’ll find watching Fev’s matches somewhat more enjoyable than would have been the case had we been facing the likes of Wigan, Saints and Catalans. So, let’s look forward to some good wins and probably much closer games than most of the ones in 2023. It’s also going to be intrigu

T'Other Side: Hunslet

Head Coach:  Dean Muir Dean Muir is in his first year as head coach of Hunslet, replacing Alan Kilshaw who has now moved to take charge of Swinton Lions. We know very little about him except that he was coach of West Bowling ARL and guided them to promotion into the National Conference League Premier division at the end of last season. He has also been involved in the coaching team at Keighley Cougars. We have no record of him ever having played as a professional.   Captain: Billy Gaylor   Billy Gaylor is one of a massive eighteen new signings for Hunslet in 2024. He made his first grade début for South Wales Scorpions in 2016 whilst on dual registration from Halifax but he never made a first grade appearance for Fax. In 2017 he joined Coventry Bears. He then moved to Keighley Cougars in 2019 and has been there until moving to Hunslet this year. He is primarily a halfback but has also been known to play at hooker and loose forward.       The Fev Connection

Squads for Fev v Dewsbury (pre-season)

Image
Fev and Dewsbury have both announced their squads for Sunday's pre-season friendly. Notes:  Thomas Smith played for Yorkshire Academy in 2023. We have been unable to find out anything about George Lauer. We guess that Joe Abson is also a trialist. Last year he played for Normanton Knights and in 2022 he was playing for Castleford Tigers reserves. Notes:  Interesting that both the Dewsbury coach and captain are former Fev players. Jamie Field is NOT the player who used to play for Fev but another player with the same name. Our former player, Jamie Field, is now 47 years old! We are guessing that Jack Briggs is the player who played for Oxford in 2014 but we don't actually know that. Dom Newton played for Oldham in 2022 and 2023.
