Fev v Keighley Cougars (1895 Cup Round 1): 21 Man Squads

Image
The Fev and Keighley squads for Sunday have both been published. The Fev squad is taken from the RFL Match Centre which is notoriously unreliable and we will make amendments, if necessary, when Fev publish the squad themselves. We find it quite difficult to see the potential shape of the teams in the form in which the clubs publish the squads so we just have to use guesswork, along with the squads in their last match, to set them out in the traditional manner running from fullback to loose forward and then subs.

fevnut's musings 2025/#08: Head Coaches, London and Keighley

Image
Head Coach Here we go again! We wish, so very much, that the club could find an appointment that would bring stability. That is not to suggest that we think that they are wrong to call an end to James Ford’s tenure which seemed to be full of instability and performances that seemed to be well below the capabilities of the squad that had been assembled. We make it a point, on fevnut’s blog or previously in the match day programme, not to criticise individual players or our coach although we have sometimes expressed our concern at the way we are performing but we have always acknowledged that they are far more knowledgeable about rugby league than we could possibly be. When we think back to some of our best head coaches, they always seemed willing to talk to fans and explain things. That was particularly true with both Peter Fox and Daryl Powell and we had the pleasure of several great discussions with both of them. We have had some truly shocking performances in recent times. fevnut's Quiz Questions 2025/#05

Image
Sorry folks, We know a lot of you enjoy thinking about our 'fevnut's quiz questions' but we have been under a lot of time pressure recently, so we haven't done a new one for a few weeks but we've done one this week! Question 1 We have seen a number of quiz questions elsewhere that provide a list of pairs and ask what is the common link between them. We thought we would try one. Here is a chart of a few Rugby League Clubs paired with sporting clubs in other countries. So what is the common link between all 6 of these pairs? Question 2 When we are doing our stats we use codes for each team so as to avoid having to type the name in full over and again. They are usually two letter codes such as 'LB' for London Broncos or 'LL' for Leigh Leopards'. There are some clubs in Super League, the Championship or League One for whom we can use a single letter code because they are the only professional or semi-professional club whose name starts with that part...

This week's referee: Fev v Keighley Cougars (1895 Cup Round1)

Image
Even though this referee began in 2019 and has taken charge of 83 matches so far, this will be only the second time he has been appointed for a Fev match. The previous one resulted in a 66-0 win for Rovers! So far in 2025, he is above average for penalties and right at the top for yellow cards. For the first few weeks of the season we will include 2024 data showing the referee's general record. We will switch over to 2025 data when there is sufficient to make comparisons relevant.

T'Other Side: Keighley Cougars

Caretaker Coach: Jordie Hedges   Jake Webster was appointed as caretaker coach in July last year following the departure of Matt Foster and for this season he became the head coach. However, earlier this week he moved into a role looking at commercial opportunities and community development and Jordie Hedges has taken the role of caretaker coach. He joined Doncaster in 2016, having previously been at South Sydney Rabbitohs. His entire playing career in the UK was at Doncaster, finishing at the end of the 2019 season. C aptain: Junior Sa’u   Junior Sa’u has been appointed as Keighley captain for 2025. He started with Newcastle Knights in 2008 and had one year at Melbourne Storm in 2013 before joining Salford in 2014 where he stayed for six seasons. During his last year at Salford, he played three games for Wakefield on loan. His next move was to Leigh in 2019. 2022 saw a big change when he went off to play rugby union for Old Glory DC in the USA. At the end of th...
