T'Other Side: Wakefield Trinity

Head Coach: Daryl Powell

The vast majority of Fev fans need no introduction to Daryl Powell who was head coach when Fev won the Championship League in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He left Fev to take over at Castleford in May 2013, but the team he had built was strong enough to complete a fourth successive League win under the stewardship of Ryan Sheridan, Danny Evans and Sean Long.

He moved from Cas to Warrington in 2022 and has taken over at Wakefield this season.

Daryl played primarily as a halfback or centre although he did also play occasionally at loose forward. He started at Sheffield in 1984 (their first season) and later also played for Keighley and Leeds (where he was also head coach from 2001 until 2003). At representative level he played for Yorkshire, England and Great Britain.

It is a bit ironic that Daryl, who was born in Ackworth, has now coached all three of the Wakefield District clubs but never played for any of them.

Captain: Matty Ashurst

A Second Rower, he was born in Wigan but his first club was St. Helens where he made his début in 2009. After 3 seasons at Saints he moved top Salford in 2012 and then to Wakefield in 2015 and this is his 10th season there. He became the Wakefield Captain at the start of 2023.

Loan players and dual registration

Wakefield players, Noah Booth (fullback/centre), Joe Law (centre), Myles Lawford (halfback), Isaac Shaw (prop) and Ethan Wood (second row) have all played for Hunslet on dual reg. A dual reg agreement with Wigan Warriors was announced but, hitherto, no Wigan players have appeared for Trinity.

There have been no loan players in or out so far this season.

The Fev connection

We know of 165 players who have appeared for both Fev and Wakefield. Each week we pick out some of the most notable ones who have played for both clubs.

Bill Allinson played for Wakefield Trinity in the second row from 1938 to 1946 making 35 appearances and scoring 7 tries. He made his début for Fev on New Year’s Day 1947 and played until March 1949 when he retired. For Fev he played on 72 occasions and scored 5 tries. Most of his games for Fev were also in the second row but he also played at hooker 16 times. In his final season at Fev he was the club captain.

England international prop forward, Darrell Griffin was born in Oxfordshire and in 2003 he signed for Wakefield Trinity from Harlequins RU. He played 97 games for Trinity scoring 9 tries and kicked 3 goals. After three seasons at Wakefield he went on to play for Huddersfield, Leeds and Salford before joining Fev in 2016. Over two seasons he played 62 games excellently for Fev and scored 3 tries. During the 2017/18 off-season he played 3 games for Morley RU leading to his being sacked for breach of contract. An industrial tribunal found that he hadn’t been in breach of his contract and he received financial compensation for his sacking. He played one final season in 2018 at Keighley.

Terry Hudson began his career with Featherstone at the age of 18 in 1969. Over 10 seasons at Rovers he played 217 games scoring 30 tries, 3 goals and 2 drop goals. In between his two spells (1969-71 and 1979-1984) at Fev he played for Hull KR (1971-75) and Wakefield Trinity 1975-1979) where he made 60 appearances and scored 4 tries. In 1984 he moved to Hunslet from where he retired in 1976.

Terry Hudson was the Rovers captain when they beat Hull 14-12 in the 1983 Challenge Cup Final.
