fevnut's quiz questions #5: A Very Special Fev Team - THE ANSWER!
How often have we seen Fev fans making up a fantasy team of their favourite Fev players! We thought we would construct one but it isn't necessarily our favourite players. It couldn't be because, although we are now in our late seventies, five of the players stopped playing before we were born! And there are three more whose careers ended before we had ever set foot in Yorkshire, even though we have now lived here for almost 50 years.
So here is our 'Very Special Fev Team'.
IT IS MADE UP OF THE PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED THE MOST GAMES FOR FEV IN EACH POSITION.
N.B. Jim Denton holds the record for Fev appearances at 440 but that includes the 303 on the wing but also 106 at centre, 20 at stand-off and 11 at fullback.
Ernie Barraclough, in addition to the 419 at prop also played 15 in the second row and 1 at hooker.
None of them started every single match in that position although Deryck Fox and Stuart Dickens' only additional matches were off the subs bench.
Remarkably, the Denton brothers, Jack Hirst and Ernest Barraclough all played in Fev's first ever match as a professional team, in the 17-3 win away against Bradford Northern on August 27th, 1921. Ernest Barraclough is the holder of Fev Heritage number 1.
Below is the list of the 20 players who have made the most total appearances for Rovers.
I come up with an idea and then one of the players doesn't fit the answer. This is a real toughie. Will give it more thought tonight!
ReplyDeleteWould love to hear about any ideas you came up with even if they don't work for the entire team!
